BEHIND THE SCENES
A little visual snapshot of the making of Standing Together over the last few years. Lots of trips were taken to the various locations in the West along the campaign trail.

Various people were ‘hired’ to be assistants along the way. Thank you to my travel buddies: Linda Alterwitz (Portland, OR); my husband — Mike Bales (Chicago, IL and NY, NY); my son — Nate Bales (Los Angeles, CA and drove north through California and Oregon to Portland, OR and finally up to Seattle, WA); Luisa Goldstein (Dallas, TX for the images that weren’t site specific); my Mom — Lois Lankford (Cheyenne, WY and drove across and up through Wyoming, Montana, back down through Idaho to Boise, ID); The Miller Family — Tarian, Pretty, Steve and Tiffany Moy-Miller (Chicago, IL); and Tamara Bridges Rothschild (Salt Lake City, UT to Ogden, UT via car, then an overnight train to Sacramento, CA, a drive through the Sierra Nevadas to Reno, NV around to Virginia City, Silver City and Carson City, NV and then back to Sacramento, CA to Pleasanton, CA to San Francisco, CA and again in Los Angeles, CA).
Because I asked various women to stand in for Inez and her fellow suffragists, I was able to meet some amazing women during the making of this project. Thank you to the League of Women Voters, AAUW, friends, and fellow photographers who helped me find models.
